Aerosol characterization, atmospheric chemistry, environmental chemistry and aerospace emissions.



Dr. Whitefield currently leads an internationally recognized research program associated with chemical and physical characterization of aerosols. In particular, he studies the aerosols generated by aerospace and other civilian and military activities. These aerosol studies are related to:

(1) environmental problems presented by aerosol production e.g. rocket impact on stratospheric zone, pollution in the North Atlantic flight Corridor; and

(2) their impact on power plant efficiency (e.g. evaluation of advanced combustor concepts for NASA's Ultra Efficient Engine Technology (UEET), evaluation of fuel additives for the US Air Force and the commercial aerospace community (Boeing, KLM, Shell).

His research has resulted in, to date, externally sponsored funding in excess of $17M. He is principal investigator on research grants currently and/or recently funded and/or sponsored by NASA, FAA, AFOSR, USAF, US Navy, Boeing, Pratt and Whitney, General Electric, the European Economic Community (EEC), and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense.


CASL is an interdisciplinary research laboratory focussing on chemical, physical and engineering issues associated with fundamental atmospheric science and atmospheric pollution. The heterogeneous chemistry, both in the ambient atmosphere and in the exhaust plumes of jet propelled vehicles passing through the atmosphere is a major thrust in CASL. This work is largely funded by federally mandated programs, and by private industry to provide data upon which to make an environmental impact assessment of rocket motors, supersonic and subsonic commercial aircraft.
