Research Activities:

James Stoffer is Curators' Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and former Director of the Graduate Center for Materials Research at UMR (now Missouri S&T) where he has taught and done research in Polymers and Coatings Science for more than 30 years. Dr. Stoffer's research activities started in organic chemistry and now are centered in the area of Polymers and Coatings Science. In 1986 he introduced ultrasonic dispersion of pigments for paints and in 1991 ultrasonically initiated free radical catalyzed polymerizations. He received a patent on this work. In 1991, Dr. Delbert Day and he were successful in preparing the first transparent composites and have received several patents for this process. Transparent composites have potential use as aircraft windows where glass fibers are incorporated into the polymer matrix to give a material which is transparent, is much lighter than regular window material and also has four or five times the strength of the plastic material. PMMA/Glass, Polycarbonate/Glass, and Kel-F/Glass composites have also been prepared. Dr. Stoffer teaches in the Coatings Science short courses at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
