What is the career outlook for this field?

A degree in chemistry can be the start of a very rewarding career. According to the latest annual American Chemical Society salary survey released in 2008, the median salary for all chemists as of March 2007 was $88,000. This is 3.5% higher than the median salary from the year-earlier survey. Significantly, in this age of job insecurity, the unemployment rate for chemistry degree holders, for over a decade, has been consistently lower than the national average.

For all chemistry graduates responding to recent surveys, the median beginning salaries were $35,000 for those with a bachelor's degree, $47,400 for those with master's degrees, and $60,000 for new doctorates. As a group, the median salaries were $68,700 for those with a bachelor's degree, $80,000 for those with master's degrees, and $96,700 for Ph.D. chemists.

What will I be studying?

The genetic code, space age materials, the heart of a semiconductor and artificial heart materials-the study of chemistry lies at the heart of understanding or designing all of them. Missouri S&T's chemistry program covers the full range of chemistry courses, mathematics, physics, and, if desired, biology, business and other areas. You may also elect to get involved in a special interest area such as analytical, bio-, electro-, environmental, inorganic, nuclear, organic, physical, polymer, or coatings chemistry. To get the B.A. degree, you'll choose coursework in a selected minor subject as well.
